Being with a narcissist can be one of the most traumatizing experiences in a relationship one can experience in life. Today, this word gets tossed around like a basketball, and so many want to label others as narcissists, it is important to see and understand that not everyone is having these experiences and they are mislabeling others.

Here are some common experiences that people may have when in a relationship with a narcissist:

  1. Constant criticism: Narcissists often criticize and belittle their partners, making them feel insecure and worthless.
  2. Manipulation: Narcissists may manipulate their partners to get what they want. This can include lying, gaslighting, and guilt-tripping.
  3. Lack of empathy: Narcissists have a limited capacity for empathy and may disregard their partner’s feelings and needs.
  4. Blame-shifting: When something goes wrong in the relationship, a narcissist may blame their partner or others, rather than taking responsibility for their own actions.
  5. Grandiosity: Narcissists may have an inflated sense of self-importance and may expect their partner to constantly praise and validate them.
  6. Emotional abuse: Narcissists may engage in emotional abuse, such as name-calling, yelling, and threatening behavior.
  7. Constant drama: Narcissists may create drama and chaos in their relationships to keep their partner off-balance and under their control.

Getting over a narcissist can be a difficult and complex process, but it is possible with the right support and strategies. Here are some steps you can take to help you get over a narcissist:

  1. Acknowledge the reality of the situation: Recognize that the person you were in a relationship with may have had narcissistic tendencies and that their behavior was not your fault.
  2. Cut off contact: It’s important to cut off all contact with the narcissist as much as possible. This includes unfollowing them on social media and avoiding any communication with them.
  3. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for emotional support during this time. Narcissistic relationships can be emotionally draining and having a support system can help you process your feelings and move forward.
  4. Practice self-care: Take time for yourself to do things that make you feel good. This can include exercise, hobbies, or anything that brings you joy and relaxation.
  5. Set boundaries: When interacting with the narcissist, be clear about your boundaries and stick to them. This can help you maintain your sense of self and prevent the narcissist from manipulating or taking advantage of you.
  6. Seek professional help: If you are struggling with severe emotional distress or trauma, seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy can help you work through your feelings and develop strategies for moving forward.
